The Northern Alberta Chugg kids: Back row: Elmer, Annie, Ruby Middle row: Allan, Evelyn , Norman Front row: Laura holding Luella Note: This is in front of the homestead home built by Edgar, the boys and a carpenter hired to do the windows. Elmer and allan worked at the shake plant and received bundles of shakes with which to side the home. Note the tar paper stuffed in around the window. I lived in this house with my Dad Elmer and family when I was six years of age. Edgar and Mary made a deal with my Dad so that he could farm and provide for his family. We had no running water or electricity for over a year. I learned first hand what a homestead was. |
The second earliest picture of the Edgar Chugg family. This is John Remple and Ruby Chugg's wedding. From the left back: Evelyn, Annie, Allan, Elmer From the left front: Norman, John Remple, Ruby Chugg Remple, Laura, Mary Ellen May Chugg holding Luella and Philip Edgar Chugg. |
I am told this photo was of the boys and the DeMaere boys at a DeMaere event in Red Deer. Edgar's sister Pearl married John Demaere. The DeMaere kids grew up along side of Edgar and his siblings just west of Granum, Alberta. Edgar's father Philip Elisha Chugg (Uncle Phil) farmed around Granum along with his brother Ebenezer Rogers Chugg (yes Rogers!). Uncle Phil's brother John stayed in Ottawa and raised a large family out there. (See his page). Charles Robert Chugg farmed in Parkbeg Saskatchewan and died young there. His wife, Catherine Julia Thompson was sister to Uncle Phil's wife Annie Thompson Chugg. Catherine moved to Granum to live with her brother Edward Thompson and his wife. They lived next door to Uncle Phil. So Edgars' boys, Uncle Phil's grandsons are in this photo down in Red Deer: Pitching -Elmer who broke his back in a pitching accident at about the age of twenty. He could not walk for over a year and suffered fromthe problems for the rest of his life. Batting- Allan who loved all sports. His sons Wesley and Gerald were excellent athletes. Catching- Reverend Norman Chugg Sometimes just one of the boys having fun! Some of the following photos belong on individual family pages and I will move them at some point. |
Phillip Elmer Chugg and Bertha Lillian Presho Chugg and family: Back row: Michael Philip Chugg, Katharine Lillian Chugg, Bradford Robert Chugg Front row: Bertha Presho Chugg, Wendy Ellen Chugg, Leslie Ann Chugg, Phillip Elmer Chugg about 1972. |

The Close family enterer New York State in the 1700's. The Close farm is located in Tioga County Penssylvania close to the Pennsylvania, NEw York border. The Close family was named the Cloos family until the Civil War. Reuben's father Waldo May moved north to Michigan and raised his family there. I will add more on Reuben's wife when I look in my reference books! |
