Locating the Cabin

Some possible links locating Philip Chugg's cabin.

I will also include Edmund Bartlett's land location.
His wife was Deborah Routliffe's sister and Philip Chugg signed the wedding registration.
He is later located in the town of Aylmer but this image is a historical record of his land.
We have no such record for Philip Chugg. Evidence will be circumstantial.

In 1854 Edmund Bartlett ( blacksmith)brother-in-law to Philip Chugg (Routliffe sisters) bought range 7 lot 2 from the Estate of Ruggles Wright Sr.

Also note on the map and from the lot sale that Luther Edey bought the north 1/2 of Range 3 lot 18. The east side of this lot becomes Rue Edey a century later.  Philip Chugg is listed in the 1881 census as a neighbor of the Edey family. Below the pictures you will find more anecdotal evidence on Philip Chugg's cabin location.

Range and lots layouts in Hull district:

Also note on the map and from the lot sale that Luther Edey bought the north 1/2 of Range 3 lot 18. The east side of this lot becomes Rue Edey a century later.  Philip Chugg is listed in the 1881 census across from the Edey farms. His farm may have been north of Samuel Edey because it is an even number lot. Luther may have been across from his father Samuel Edey because his lot is odd numbers. Also Andrew Grimes would be living on his parents land which is identified by Anson Gard on the map below. Andrew Grimes is an odd numbered lot.

The modern day photo of Edey Road and the intersection of Aylmer Road has empty golf course land located on the Grimes plot. To the east is the swimming pool. Of interest are the flat rock formations talked about by Eb Chugg to his daughter Nellie Chugg Lang when they visited in the 1940's. Eb said they used to play on the flat rocks. Such rocks are pictured below.

These flat rocks would be on the Grimes property. But the are other flat rock formations further north on the golf course.
The larger red rocks may have been across the road from the Chugg cabin. See below.

You can see that if the Chugg cabin was west (or left) of the red rocks, the land has all been developed with housing.
Below is an image of the Grimes property acknowledged as such by the naming of a road after the Grimes family.

The census of 1861 places Philip Chugg, wheelwright, on the road with Edey families, Bryan Daly family, Kernahan family, Grimes family and McConnell family.
in the 1852 census Deborah Wright owned 200 acres along this road. Was she related to the sisters Abigail and Elizabeth Wright who both marries Samuel Edey and passed on. Could part of the Samuel Edey farm have been left to Deborah Wright. She is not listed on the road in 1861.
The Census of 1861 places Philip Chugg and Robert Duncan between the 1852 census record of Bryan Daly and William Kernahan.
Robert Duncan moved to this farm to be close to Aylmer Road as he took on the job of Toll Collector on Aylmer Road. He lived in this new place became known at  the time as "Duncan Road". Now it is Edey Road. Mr. Duncan's wife Mary McNaul Duncan continued to live in the farm house until her death in 1913.  Philip Chugg lived  with his new family in his cabin from 1861 until 1885 when he died on the road.

Philip Chugg's other neighbor in 1861,   Bryan Daly:

1851 Census:

The William Kernahan land:

William Kernahan is found in the 1911 census and also the 1921 census. In 1921 he is living with his niece and family in the Hull area.

In 1865 James Cassidy, who owned other plots of land in the area purchased 100 acres beside Philip Chugg. James Cassidy was also appointed a County School Commissioner. It appears that Matthias Daly took over the Daly farm, so it is difficult to say where the Cassidy land was without specific land records.

Another of Philip Chugg's neighbors was Luther Edey who farmed his land his entire adult life. Luther was a Town alderman for Chelsea and was the son of Samuel Edey:
