      John Chugg in the News

In a conversation with John's grandson, Hector Chugg

I learned from Hector that John Chugg had many brushes

with death in his career in electrical work.

Despite this, John lived to the age of 93 and his household

cared for and supported at least four generations of the Chugg family.

John Chugg and Anna Ada Milks marriage register link.Anna Ada Chugg's death registry link.

John Chugg aged 20 of Hull Township, Quebec is registered here as a farmer. His parents are listed as Philip Chugg and Catherine Davis.

Anna Ada Milks of Ottawa does not have her age listed. Her parents are listed as Charles Milks and Sarah Davis.

John and Anna were cousins. They were married on January 13th 1886 in Ottawa, Canada and are listed as Methodists.

My discovery of the Chugg link to the Milk - Milks Family originally of Salem Massachusetts, 1660:

 From-

Carrie and Hector and Siblings,  Jim Chugg of Ohio and siblings,

Just a quick note to say that I purchased the Milk – Milks family genealogy book.  Unfortunately I received the earlier version 1952, but lucked out tonight and got the 1956 revision online. I was able to print out the Canada Milks pages.

I have a direct line from Anna Ada Milks Chugg that goes back to John Milk, cowherd and chimney sweep 1662 in Salem Massachusetts.   This means that you are direct descendants of the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock in Salem Massachusetts.

Here is the lineage:

John Milk & Sarah Wesson m 1665  Salem, Mass

John Milk Jr. & Elizabeth Hempfield  m 1689  Marblehead, Mass

Job Milk & Abigail Davol m 1719  Little Compton, Rhode Island

Jonathan Milk & Mercy Trowbridge  m. 1747 Dartmouth, Mass

Job Milk  & wife lived in Amenia, New York  1770  ( My wife’s cousin lives here and has a famous garden.  I’ve been to Amenia.)

Freeborn Garretson Milks & Sarah “Sally” Moore  m. 1799 Vermont moved to Eardley, Quebec to work as carpenter and millwright and lived in a blockhouse with four children and grandchildren. Died in Kingsley Michigan.

Charles Milks & Sarah Davis (Sister of my great grandmother Catherine Davis) m Sarah Davis  502 ½ Maria St Ottawa and later Perth Ontario.

Your families enter after this family entry.

I find this info amazing. Further Anna Ada was a twin. Additionally her father Charles had 12 siblings.  This means Anna Ada had tons of cousins living in Eardley, South Onslow, Cantley, Aldfield,Gracefield and Kingsley Michigan.

This was a huge family and I now can surmise that Anna must have had a wonderful life in close proximity to so many siblings and cousins.

Hope this gives you more of an idea about the Chugg family…

Anna Ada Chugg's death registry. She was 50 years old. Her parents were listed as Charles Milks and Sarah Davis. Dr Kay was the attending physician. Anna Ada's husband is listed as J. Chugg. Their residence was 111 Albert Street, Ottawa.

Anna Ada died of septicemia on November 11th, 1918. She had septicemia for several weeks prior to her death. She died in St. Luke's hospital.

The tragedy here is that documents on three sons' pages indicate that Anna Ada died without knowing that her three sons would return from World War I safely, one year later.

Former home of John Chugg and family - 62 Frank Street Ottawa, Ontario

John Chugg Carpenter 504 Maria 1889 link.
John Chugg is listed here as a carpenter. He is listed as head of the household at 504 Maria Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

On the right hand side of this picture John Chugg's address is boxed in. He lived at 504 Maria Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Anna Ada Milks father, Charles Milks is listed at 502 1/2 Maria Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

When asking the question, how could John marry his cousin, Anna Ada, it is important to note that the two were next door neighbors. I note that this is not an unusual situation as my ancestors on my mothers side lived just doors apart and married. In the next generation to follow this in Alberta, neighbors married. And in a succeeding generation a brother and sister of a Chugg family married  a brother and sister of another family. Further, John's two brothers, Charles and Ebenezer married the Thompson sisters. Often it seems that people married of whom they were acquainted, often neighbors or close members of a social network. This reflects a time when people did not travel far form home and married others from the same location.

Here John Chugg is listed at 504 Maria Street and his brother Elijah (Philip Elisha Chugg) is listed at 15 Christie Street  Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Philip was listed as a mill hand at the time and his brother was listed as a laborer. Charles Robert Chugg and John Chugg are listed as head of households. Charles is a laborer and lives at 139 Norman Street  Ottawa, Ontario. John is listed as a trimmer for the O. E. Company and is located at 106 St. Patrick  Ottawa, Ontario Canada.

Catherine Chugg is listed as the widow of Philip Chugg and living as head of the household at 135 Norman Street. John Chugg is listed as laborer and head of household at 504 Norman St.  Philip E Chugg (Philip Elisha Chugg) is listed as a laborer and head of household at Pamilla and 1 West Preston.  Maps show Pamilla as just around the corner from Norman St. Maria is also in the area. This is the section that became Little Italy in Ottawa.

Interment records for two of John and Anna Ada Chugg's little boys,

Charles Haythorne Chugg and Alex Philip Chugg in the Beechwood Cemetery

in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. These two boys are not listed on the spreadsheet family tree

and I still have this information to add. 504 1/2 Maria Street was Anna Ada Milks fathers home.

The Chugg family lived next door.

Brother to my great grandfather, John Chugg is buried with his two daughters Ada Beatrice Chugg (Aunt Bea) and Grace Louise Chugg Peake

Slanted headstone with cross is that of Earl Minto (Peter) Chugg, son of John Chugg, grandson of Philip Chugg. He lived in Indianapolis and was married to Lydia Wagoner. She died twenty years later and is buried in Indianapolis.  Tall gravestone to the right of Earl Chugg is that of Ada Milks Chugg, wife of John Chugg and also of infant sons Alex Chugg and Haythorne Chugg. To the right and in the foreground of Ada Chugg's gravestone is the gravestone in the grass which is that of John Chugg, Ada Beatrice Chugg and Grace Louise Chugg Peake.

The writing on the stones face east. This is in section 39 of Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa Ontario, Canada. This is lot 69 1/2 in section 39.   The maps below indicate the location section 39. Also, the graves of William Chugg and Isabella Chugg are located in plot 70, very close to John Chugg's graves and just to the south.

This model of Beechwood Cemetery indicates the curved hump of section 39. The north end where the trees are is where the Chugg family is buried. However, one son John Henry (Harry) Chugg and his wife Olive Hunter Chugg are interred in the mausoleum which is the large building in section 53.

Here is a close up of the model of section 39 of Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa Ontario, Canada and the Chugg family is located between the trees.

Plot 69 1/2 is full and lists the remains of :

Charles Haythorne Chugg infant

Alex Philip Chugg infant

Anna Ada (Milks) Chugg - mother

The yellow highlighter in this photo indicates the location of the Chugg graves

in the Northeast section of plot 69 1/2 in Section 39 of Beechwood Cemetery

in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The blank space in the top right corner of this photo indicates

the plot owned by Philip Elisha Chugg and contained the

remains of his brother William Chugg and of Isabella Chugg.

This is plot 70 of section 39 of Beechwood Cemetery in

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. There are no grave markers on

this ground but the records beside this photo indicate the

Chugg members interred within.
