 +Unknown

Family of Nicholas Chugge b. 1451

Note: There is a generation gap here.

In the Hilary term of 1434, images documented at University of Houston, many people owed John Babyngton debts including Margaret Chugge of Barnestaple, widow of John Chugge.

Family of Henry Chugge 1387 - 1427  note Henry is dead before children are born. Missing parent here....

NOTE: There is a William Chugge of 1448 of Sampford Courtenay, a fisher, who owed a debt to Baron, John, of Exeter, a merchant. This 1448 William Chugge may be the Willelmus Chugge born 1433. It may be possible that this William Chugge is in the descendancy.

It is possible that this portion of the family lived around Sampford Courtenay in the 1300's and 1400's and Hatherleigh.

One, John Chugg thought to be brother of Robert of Heavitree b. 1520, but perhaps John was a Sampford Courtenay Chugge who had a daughter Alice born January 24th 1579 in Sampford Courtenay.

At this same time, one William Chugge of Hatherleigh, a husbandman, was brought up on trespass charges in 1516 under the list of charged under Henry VIII  CP 40/ 1013.

It may be possible that we have William Chugge of Sampford Courtenay 1448 as father of  William Chugge of Hatherleigh 1516, as father of John Chugg of Sampford Courtenay born around 1520, who in turn was father to Alice Chugge of Sampford Courtenay born in 1579.

50 years later we have Richard Chugge in Sampford Courtenay. 1629 through 1648.

Family of Richard Chugge 1352 see image below:

Interestingly, there is a much earlier recorded Chugge , William Chugge on the tax roll of Winckleigh Hundred in 1332. This village actually paid a tithe to Heanton Punchardon  where many generations of our ancestors lived and our ggg grandparents are buried.. The images below document the existence of William Chugge:

Other Chugge members that could possibly be related:

Court records for the Manor of Hatherleigh, close to Winkleigh identify the presence of

William Chugge  in 1518 and 1519.

Later, there is the record of John Chugg, Freeholder of North Lew on the tax records for 1733. North Lew is close to Hatherleigh. Hatherleigh had to pay tax to Heanton Punchardon too.  All locations are a distance south of Barnstaple.

Earlier there is also reference to  William Chugge of Winkleigh 1332, Richard Chugge of Winkleigh, Nov. 3, 1395, and slightly south of Bideford and Barnstaple in Frythelestoke, John Chugge- tonsurat(monk) from Exeter in May 24, 1390.   Winkleigh is very close to Hatherleigh and North Lew, as well. These locations are 18 miles from Barnstaple and 23 miles from East Down. (Relatively close).

It is entirely possible that the oldest patriarch of the Chugg family that exists would be William Chugge of Winkleigh, taxpayer on the Ley Rolls of 1332. I say this because Richard Chugge, thought to be our oldest ancestor, from Winkleigh, born in 1352.

Dear Michael

Your e mail was passed to us from Mr Mark Stowell. We are Mike and Lesley Passmore and have lived happily at 108 Pilton Street for over 32 years raising our family of three sons.

We attach a photo of our cottage, Pilton Street and photos of Barnstaple High Street showing 53 High Street which is now a sports shop.

We were contacted about 20 years ago by a visiting Canadian couple who also had links with the Chuggs who lived here. We have exchanged Christmas cards since then up to the last few years and their address is as follows:

 Mr & Mrs C Barber

 25 Cawder Drive NW

 Calgary Alta

 TRL 0LB

 Canada

They managed to contact Helen & Bill Chugg who descend from your family. They live and work locally and you can contact them on: selectedantiques@aol.com or phone: 01271 321338 mobile: 07866 024831 (with international code).

They know their ancestors were farmers,

We hope this information helps you obtain more information of your Devon roots.

Just a few points: Barnstaple is a small market town. Pilton is a village on the edge of Barnstaple. 108 Pilton Street was originally two cottages knocked into form one good sized home but cannot be described as a large house. The cottages date back to Tudor times and have been altered over the years. We found an original very large stone fireplace together with beams and handmade brick internal walls. The wood in the walls was taken from Rolle Quay where the ‘tall ships’ were made and have grooves in them where they would fit against other wooden beams. We have a piece of green glass which was known as ‘poor man’s glass’ and has a bulls eye and would have been off cuts of the process used to make glass hundreds of years ago. The cottage has lots of character and is a very comfortable, warm home.

Good luck with your search.
