Locating the Cabin

Reminded the other night of Grandma Mary May Chugg's story of the Eddy Match holder on her wood stove in the town of Grande Prairie. As a child Grandma told us that we should only have our parents buy Eddy matches. She told us that Mr. Eddy's daughter let her husband Phillip Edgar Chugg's father and brothers run the dairy on her property. This was Mrs. Ella Bessey, the daughter of the Match King- Ezra Butler Eddy. She said that Mrs. Bessey was very kind to the family and that we should always remember that with gratitude and show our gratefulness by supporting Eddy matches.  See: Chugg Family History P61.

May 2019: Charles Robert Chugg died January 27,1924 at the Weyburn Mental Hospital in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. His son Eddie died  January 4, 1928 in Ottawa at the Royal Ottawa Sanatorium of TB. It turns out that the Weyburn Mental Hospital had a TB Annex. Charles was committed in November of 1923 and lived only 2 months longer. It now seems likely that he too had TB.

June 2018: Canadian Chugg family connected to the Berrynarbor Chugg Family 10 generations back. The Berrynarbor Chugg story so far.  https://sites.google.com/view/chuggofberrynarbor/home

June 2018: The Devon Census of 1850 identifies one Walter Chugg of Chittlehampton in Devon, quite close to Winkleigh, Torrington and Barnstaple - all locations of Chugg families. While this Walter is not a direct family relative, I find his story interesting in that the farm still stands today. To see an image or two of Walter Chugg's farm and to learn more of his story please view the Walter Chugg 1850 page.

May 2018:

It is now possible to consider that the oldest Chugg patriarch that we can document through 1 document is William Chugge, tax payer on the Ley Rolls of 1332. He lived in Winkleigh, Devon, England. It might be possible that Richard Chugge of the Winkleigh area born in 1352 may be his son. It is thought that Richard Chugge is our ancestor.

For an interesting read study the Walter Chugg page. Walter Chugg is proven to be the first Chugg in Canada landing very briefly on the ship Sapphire in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland in August of 1696. He composed his will with attorneys and witnesses including church wardens indicating his role on the Sapphire in November  of 1696.  You will find video of the ships, artifacts and a National Park.

July 2016:  Thanks to Thelma Hartman's research - Great Great Grandmother Catherine Davis Chugg  had a brother William Davis who moved to Cresco Iowa and moved on to Park City, North Dakota. We now have her brother's history and photos. Look on the first ancestry page under Catherine Davis Chugg.
